42 Memorial Fund

Bronze Memorial for

Cdo Garden of Remembrance

The previous page was: "42 Cdo Honourable Warriors"

42 Commando Royal Marines are going to raise the funds of £47K for a Memorial for fallen 42 Commandos in their Garden of Remembrance. Obviously raising this money will entail a lot of work. The 42 Commando Royal Marine Association have offered their help.

You might imagine that assistance would be close at hand from Central Office, but this cannot be the case. They have to take into consideration all of the Associations and not individual Associations. The aim of this page is to keep you informed of the good work carried out by Brian Downey the Welfare Officer of 42 CDO RMA.

A Call For Our Assitance

Below is a letter from Warrent Officer First Class P S Gilby, Royal Marines Regimental Sergeant Major, 42 Commando Royal Marines.

Mr Downey

I am writing to you in your capacity as Welfare Officer for The 42 Commando Association and asking your advice and possible assistance.

Currently the Unit is trying to raise funds for a new memorial in our garden of Remembrance which is situated in the middle of the camp, the cost of which is £47K. We have tried obtaining the money through military sources but we have been informed that we have to raise the money ourselves.

In the past we have remembered our fallen by planting a tree and placing a brass plaque at the base. Due to the current tempo of operations and the unfortunate loss of life the garden is now full and it is not possible to plant any more trees in this area.

The Proposed memorial of an eight foot bronze figure in dressed combat clothing, looking back at the Dewerstone Hill will be stood on Dartmoor Granite. It is intended to place brass plaques on the stone to remember the fallen. The memorial will last indefinately as extra granite could be added if it was needed.

Is there any way the Association could assist us in raising some funds for this project or if you know of any business that would be willing to donate to this very worthy cause?

Anybody that assists with raising funds for this project will be invited to the opening of the memorial. We are in the process of setting up a website with all the details of the memorial and how much money has been raised, but this will not be live for a couple of weeks.

If you feel this is a worthy cause that the Association could assist with then please contact me. Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated and I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best

Signed Phil Gilby

Please donate if you are able to

This truly is a worthy cause and you could help with a donation. History has shown that the British Commando is the most highly trained fighting-soldier ever. Nobody has proven their value on the battlefield to be better than the Commando.

By giving a donation you can feel proud to be helping others not to forget the valour and bravery of these great soldiers that die in battle.

Troop Aid

Supporting our Injured Troops

To show that we do raise money ourselves for these Charities and are not asking you to do something that we are not already doing. Please read this letter of 30th June 2009 to 42 CDO RMA welfare Sectretary Brian Downey.

Dear Brian

Thank you for the very generous donation of £500 from 42 Commando R.M.Association which was raised at their Annual Re-union in Blacpool on 19/22 June. This is a magnificent effort by this organisation. On behalf of the Trustees of Troop Aid we would like to say a huge "thank you" to you and your fellow members.

With your help we can make life a bit more comfortable for our injured troops returning from conflict in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Your donation will go towards providing warm clothing such as fleeces, track suits, socks and trainers plus many other items of clothing and toiletries. It will also go towards assisting families of those seriously injured whilst accommodated at Selly Oak Hospital. We are currently sending our now famous individual Grab Bags with the basic necessities out to the Military Hospitals at Camp Bastion and Kandahar in Afghanistan plus Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham and several other Ministry of Defence Hospital Units in the UK.

Thank you for your support, it is very much appreciated.

Yours sincerely

Dear Brian

DONATION TO RCDM PATIENT WELFARE FUND

Firstly, may I on behalf of the soldiers, sailors airmen and women who have had the misfortune (due to wounding) to pass through this organisation, now and in the future, offer my sincerest thanks to you and all the 'Old and Bald' 42 Commando, Royal Marines for the very generous donation of £715.00, to the RCDM Patien Welfare Fund.

It is quite simply a great gesture and will make a considerable difference to those military personnel that have been wounded in action and their families. As you may be aware this money will be used in a myraid of different ways but you can be absolutely sure that every penny spent will be for the direct benefit of the servicemen and women that find themselves as battle casualties here at Selly Oak Hospital. Troop Aid will also welcome the other donation you mentioned in your letter.

Once again, thank-you for this fantastic donation, I will pass on to the patients your kind words of support, it is a huge boost to the wounded to know there is such wonderful public support out there.

Yours Aye Ian
