Kommando
Originally a South African Burgher

Commando; the word Kommando originated in South Africa; they were units of highly mobile white Kommandos who rode quickly on horseback. They were a Military force called: Burghers (freemen).
The advantage they had was; they knew the land, they travelled light and they could cover ground a lot quicker than the British Forces.
The white freemen had a free hand; they took command of their own actions. They ruled how they pleased and they answered to nobody; law or person. They did accept the commando's structure where seniority was gained by example and respect.
They were a strong body of troopers who struck quickly and hard, then they departed on completion of their mission. Some called them storm-troops, because of their effect and the speed they could sweep through an area.

British Commando a different type of soldier
Then came the British Royal Marine a different type of soldier; a professional, a man of self-discipline and esprit de corps.
These elements derive from unselfish volunteers, courageous soldiers with high standards and nothing less; proud men who want to take on this important albeit a perilous job.
Element of darkness is a blessing
A soldier quick to learn the lesson that darkness is indeed a blessing and not a hindrance.
The element of darkness fits into his roll of a clandestine fighter, insertion, surprise, stealth, mystery and guile were the tools of his mental and physical abilities.
To endow him with a physical fitness approaching that of a trained athlete; with the mental capabilities to endure extreme hardship.
Together the high state of mental and physical fitness helps him to overcome the most arduous tasks with a cheerful heart.
The strenuous exercises of physical efforts give him confidence and excellent mental training.
Initiative is highly important
The element of initiative is highly important for him to be able to adapt fast; using his skill to use all infantry weapons available in and on the battle field. Or to act quickly and effectively in many different situations.
To have an aptitude for co-operation with others on the field of battle; for him this normal function remains constant.
To make him eager to attack; fair or foul, he has to acquire the mastery of the arts of survival.
The determination to complete the task allocated to him; no other result is acceptable in the fight of do or die in all conditions. Not only on land, a steep cliff or a mine sown bog, also on sea, and if needs be by or in the air.
Commando Soldier's no Superman
The commando soldier is no superman and he is not trained to be one, nor has he been encouraged to think that he is that. But he is intensely proud of the particular position he holds amongst the nation's elite fighting men. And who is wholly dependable in a pinch.
When not doing his job he is the same as Joe Bloggs or any other man in the street; except with the difference; he had become a commando of his own free will; he chose to become specially trained to perform tasks of a hazardous kind; to become the most excellent fighting man.
The average special soldier is a very ordinary individual who more often than not is insignificant to look at and not the 'glamour boy or caf'e gangster' you might imagine.
In many cases he is physically small rather than large as is often imagined. No part of the UK furnished the, best type of person, nor class.

The tough in this soldier is his brain
The elite soldier differs in no other way from his brothers in arms elsewhere; except in his chosen status and the intensity of his training.
Basically it is infantry training, but just a little harder and a little tougher. The tough in this soldier is his brain-not in the physical department.
Having a tough brain helps the mental condition of a fully trained body to be able to endure very great fatigue.
Having a mind unwilling to accept defeat even in the face of overwhelming odds, this elite soldier's training helps in the implicit belief in his own powers, and determination that his limit of endurance will always be higher and stronger than that of his enemy.
Commandos are all volunteers
First and foremost the commandos that go into action are all volunteers. They have elected deliberately and with their eyes open, to perform deeds of a hazardous nature.
They are not placed in the forefront of battle, they go there of their own deliberate choice and in doing so they acquire the rights and assumed the responsibilities of all who embark upon a career of their own free will.
