Gibraltar
The famous Rock that Guards the Mediterranean
The previous page was: "Christmas Poem"
Suprisingly the World Famous Rock of Gibralar has not been fought over that many times considering its strategically important position at the gateway to the Mediterranean Sea.
In 711 AD the Rock was taken over by A Moors Leader who arrived
from Africa. Tarik Also conquered a lot of Southern Spain making Cordoba into an elegant city and the capital of the Islamic Spain.
As a result of progress the "Mezquita" was built which today is one of the most fascinating buildings in the world. This building with its remaining 856 columns holding up its unique arches was the most beautiful and largest mosque outside of the Middle East and is now the cathedral of Cordoba.
It also has a proud Roman heritage and Roman bridges, Mosaics and baths that can be seen today. It is also possible to just wonder through the old Jewish Quarter or just take in the beauty of the city's gardens, fountains and patios.
Tarik-ibn Zeyad a Musa-ibn-Nosseyers is the first recorded conqueror of the famous rock which he immediately named 'Tarik's Hill' which is not unusual by someone who discovers or conquerors an important item or place.

Tarik's Hill
Gebel-Tar
Gibraltar
Tarik was the Commander of 12,000 highly trained Arabic soldiers. With his powerful force he could go anywhere and lay claim to anywhere or anything he chose.
He had no trouble conquering the Rock and went on to conquer a vast area of Southern Spain. Moorish evidence can still be seen today; it is displayed in many of the older Spanish buildings. The Moors dominated Gebel-Tar for over seven-hundred years.
I believe the name Gibraltar changed after the departure of the Moors, because of the different dialects and languages that have tried to pronounce the name Gebel-Tar and sometimes the speed of some peoples pronunciations all combined to derive at the name of Gibraltar.
Not only that some people speak like they have a plumb in their mouth which changes the pronounciation of every word they speak.

Tarik's Hill or Gebel-Tar
Tarik's Hill in Arabic would have been pronounced Gebel (hill) Tar. There are many different languages that pronounce their words differently to the way the British do; Tarik's Hill is normal to the British way of thinking and turned around Hill Tarik is normal to other nationalities.
With the Arabic word Gebel meaning hill and Tar being a shortened version of Tarik's full name Gebel-Tar would have been the normal everyday word used.
In my opinion and it is my opinion, it appears to me to be a logical progression of what might have evolved. Many of the different languages often pronounce words and names differently. Tarik’s Hill might be understood as Tarik’s Gebel but it was most probably pronounced as Gebel-Tar.
