Sea Cadets Corps

Membership is increasing

The previous page was: "Royal Marines Museum"

The Sea Cadets Corps are not a pre-service organisation for the Royal Navy; like many people believe nor are they a Para-military organisation for any of the armed services.

Some of them do however go on to join the Royal Navy or become Royal Marine Commandos.

Then eventually some do join the associations. The associations of the armed forces help to keep former members in touch.

The young cadets are a voluntary youth organisation and they are a registered charity.

Their aim is to offer young people a sense of pride with a sense of values of the highest traditions of the Royal Navy.

Teaches them to be self-confident

Members of the Sea Cadets Corps learn to be self-confident; they also learn leadership, which in turn teaches them self-disciplin.

Community values teach them to behave in a proper manor when going about their neighbourhood.

In 1856 the veterans returning from the Crimean War set up the Naval Lads Brigade in some south east towns of the UK.

This was the beginning of the cadets as we know them today.

They grow up to be very smart young people

There are a lot of adult volunteers who give their time feely to help the youngsters. Former service men and women offer their special skills to help in their training; and in many cases they grow up to be very smart young people.

They have a wide range of activities that include rowing, sailing, canoeing and all types of boat work.

They do sports like swimming and football and they practice the more technical trades of the navy.

From the age of twelve girls and boys are eligible to join the Cadets Band.

When they reach the right standard with their instruments; they can be drawn into the massed bands from anywhere in the country. Their motto is: Ready Aye Ready.
